The Fireworks Safety Code

When using fireworks we want you to have a great time with lots of fun memories. Here are a few notes on good practice, including some sensible precautions to help you achieve this. These notes do not replace common sense.

ALWAYS READ AND FOLLOW THE FIREWORK INSTRUCTIONS.

THESE NOTES ARE NOT INTENDED TO BE A FULLY COMPREHENSIVE SET OF INSTRUCTIONS.

General Information

    • Remember that fireworks are explosives. They can be very dangerous if not handled correctly.
    • Do not under estimate the power of fireworks, even the small ones.
    • All fireworks which can be used by the public must conform to the safety standard BS7114 or are CE marked. This quality standard should be printed on every firework sold to the public in the UK.
    • If any of your fireworks appear to be damaged or modified do not use them.
    • If in doubt, phone us 0131 513 9758

The Law

  • It is an offence for anyone under the age of 18 to buy or attempt to buy fireworks.
  • Firework usage has now been brought into line with other noise legislation, prohibiting the use of fireworks between 23.00 hours and 07.00 hours.
  • Some exceptions apply:
    • Chinese New Year: 1am to 7am
    • 5th November: Midnight to 7am
    • Diwali: 1am to 7am
    • New Years Eve: 1am to 7am
  • Setting off fireworks in a public place is now a specific offence.
  • Fireworks can only be sold by licensed outlets. Do not buy fireworks from unlicensed traders.

Storage & Usage Of Fireworks

  • Store your fireworks in a box in a cool dry place away from children and animals as well as flames, heat or spark generating equipment.
  • Use portfires / tapers to light all of your fireworks. Matches can be unreliable.
  • Do not drink alcohol if setting off fireworks
  • Always light a firework at arms length. Never lean over or towards a firework when lighting it.
  • Never return to a firework that goes out or fails to fire fully.
  • Ensure your fireworks are well secured prior to lighting. They must not be allowed to fall over.
  • Rockets must be able to move freely within its firing tube and not obstructed at the top in any way.
  • Always angle your rockets a few degrees away from your audience. Be sure that your rocket sticks have a suitable and safe place to fall.
  • Stand upwind if possible otherwise you might be covered in fallout, including particles of paper and card.
  • Read and follow the instructions on every firework. These instructions do not replace common sense. If there is conflicting information or if you have any queries regarding setting up or firing your fireworks safely, ask before you use it.
  • Never put fireworks in your pocket.
  • Never throw fireworks at property, individuals or animals.

Sparklers

  • Ensure children are supervised at all times when they are using sparklers. The vast majority of reported firework injuries are related to burns from sparklers.
  • Light sparklers one at a time.
  • We recommend wearing gloves, never hold the burnt end and put used sparklers in a bucket of water.

Courtesy

  • Inform neighbours that you are having a firework display. They may need to make special arrangements for animals, children, elderly or sick people.
